Alexis Baro was born into a musical family and raised in the heart of Havana, Cuba. His mother is a cellist with the National ballet company of Cuba and is also a music teacher. One of his aunts is a viola player for the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, two other aunts play violin and piano respectively.
Alexis began playing trumpet at a very early age and has classical training, graduating from the Amadeo Roldan Music Institute, one of the top music schools in Cuba where he received his music teaching certification. From the age of 19 he worked as lead trumpet in the Radio and Television Orchestra of Cuba.
In 2001, Alexis made Toronto, Canada his permanent home where he has continued to broaden his musical influences. Alexis has toured Europe, and Canada with various artists, including Canefire, Kollage, Hilario Duran and David Rudder to name just a few. In 2004, Kollage received a National Jazz award for best acoustic group, and he has also been nominated many times for trumpeter of the year.
Alexis is hitting his stride as a composer of note having written several tunes of the Kollage albums "Fine Print" and "At This Time". He also writes for Canefire and his own ensemble which recorded "Havana Banana" in 2005 and the upcoming "From the Other Side" to be released in 2009. In 2007 he was co-winner of a Juno Award with Hilario Duran's Big Band. He also performs on live television for Canadian Idol and Canada's walk of Fame. Alexis is a highly motivated and fiery virtuoso trumpet player who is comfortable performing multiple genres of music in a variety of settings, from studio recordings , concerts and festivals to small and intimate venues. His musical passions range from Jazz, funk, soul, R&B and more. Alexis performs regularly in the Toronto music scene and continues to record, teach, compose and arrange music. He is definitely a musician to watch out for.
Alexis opened for Herbie Hancock at the 2008 Ottawa Jazz Fest, received a special mention at the Montreal Jazz Festival Grand Prix for a memorable performance. He has also recorded with Canadian icons Nelly Furtado and Ivana Santelli and has done arrangements for various vocalists. And these are some of the people Alexis has performed with: Paquito D'rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Andrea Bocelli, Omara Portuondo, Robert Goulet, Paul Shaeffer, Paul Anka, David Foster, Baby Face, Wayne Newton, Michael Buble, Tom Jones.
